Which country has a large number of ship builders?

I can say the first 3 are:

1-Japan

2- Korea

3-China

Although owners/charterers prefer Japan built ships,the mentality changes.

China seems to get on the head soon.

Korea emerged as the largest shipbuilder among the 30 members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) last year, edging out Japan for the first time in history. The National Statistical Office (NSO) said that the country constructed a total of 12.21 million gross tonnage (G/T) of ships in 2000, followed by Japan with 12 million G/T and Germany with 975,000 G/T (one G/T is equivalent to 2.83 cubic meters).

Poland was ranked fifth with 626,000 G/T, followed by Italy with 537,000 G/T, Spain with 460,000 G/T, Denmark with 373,000 G/T and the Netherlands with 296,000 G/T. The NSO cited the 2001 World Shipbuilding Statistics published by Lloyd%26#039;s Register.

The list of ship builders is less important than the orders they are getting.. every year a lot of builders are disappearing because of heavy competition. Nevertheless, more ships are needed to ship in the endless stream of goods coming from the far east...
