I can build simple sites with html and Dreamweaver, but what educational background do the people have that can build the comples sites such as Amazon for instance?

I know the guy that started eBay was a programmer.

But I am wondering how to get started building a complex site of my own? I know I can get a site-store builder on Yahoo but I want to build my own from scratch. I will take the courses if I know waht I need.

What you need is to know your market, have the interpersonal skills to get financial backing, and then hire someone to make it for you.

The guys who made eBay didn%26#039;t make it what it is today, in any sense, by themselves. They had lots and lots of help and lots and lots of money. You%26#039;ll need the same.

Other Replys:you can start with php and mysql to understand how online systems work then once youve then theres java cgi asp .net c# ect.... you dont need to go to school to learn this, u dont have to go to school to learn anything in the world

eBay is not a single web server. It is a bank of servers (including database, application and web servers) all working in conjunction with each other to serve up web pages, receive bids, track auctions, etc. The %26quot;public%26quot; interface that we interact with is backed up by a host of %26quot;private%26quot; interfaces that the eBay support staff interfaces with to deal with customer service issues, billing, troubleshooting, etc.

While you could start off small with just a simple web server, and possibly database server for a basic web application, having some knowledge of how to develop web applications to scale to the demand eBay experiences on a daily basis is absolutely necessary. Having a talented system architect or very talented developer to direct this is critical for success.
